The Edge Cloud Comeback Story You Never Finished Reading
The edge-cloud name I once told you to avoid just landed a Wall Street upgrade.
Two years ago, I'd have told you to stay far away from this edge-cloud name. Customer concentration was a mess, growth had rolled over, and its biggest rival was eating its lunch. The story has flipped.

Retirement Risk Rising (Sponsored)
The national debt has moved beyond $40 trillion, while rising interest costs are putting even more pressure on Washington’s finances.
Elon Musk says the long-term trajectory is unsustainable without dramatic economic growth.
For retirement savers, the bigger question is how much of their wealth remains exposed if markets get rough.

A lot can happen in two years, and Fastly (NASDAQ: FSLY) has proven that and then some. Customer concentration was a mess, growth had rolled over, and Cloudflare was eating its lunch. The story has flipped. The stock has noticed, but the Street's numbers may not have caught up yet.
Fastly just caught a fresh upgrade ahead of Q3 earnings: Oppenheimer moved it from Perform to Outperform with a $35 target, and the stock jumped about 16% on Friday to a market cap of roughly $4.7 billion.
Here's the thesis in plain terms: AI traffic is lighting up the edge, security is now a legitimate second line of business, and management has spent the last two years rebuilding the enterprise book from scratch.
Action: Open a starter position in the $26 to $31 range before the Q3 earnings print, with room to add on any pullback into the low $20s. The catalyst you want to be positioned for is a 2026 revenue guidance raise alongside those results.

What Just Happened
Oppenheimer upgraded Fastly on Friday and now expects Q3 revenue to land at the top end of management's $184 million to $190 million range.
More importantly, the firm thinks Fastly could lift its full-year 2026 growth outlook to roughly 20% to 21%, up from a more modest prior target.
Not exactly fireworks on the surface. But it's a real inflection for a business that was growing in the single digits not long ago.
Two things are driving it: AI-related traffic hitting the platform, and faster-than-expected attach of Fastly's security add-ons into existing accounts. Both are durable, not one-quarter sugar highs you'll regret chasing.

What the Business Actually Does
Fastly runs an edge cloud platform. In plain English, it operates a global network of servers that delivers websites, apps, and video close to the end user, then layers security on top: web application firewall, bot management, and DDoS protection.
The competitors you'll hear named are Cloudflare, Akamai and the delivery arms of the big cloud providers.
Why does the niche matter now? AI. AI agents and AI crawlers generate a flood of requests that have to be served, filtered, and secured somewhere close to the user.
If you're betting on AI usage growing, you want exposure to the pipes that carry that traffic, not just the chips. That's Fastly's lane.
Security is the second engine. Security revenue grew 21% in 2025 to about $125 million, faster than the core delivery business, and Oppenheimer's checks point to growing contract values as customers add the newer security products.

Why the Market Cares Again
AI inference traffic is landing at the edge. The content that AI apps spit back to users still has to be delivered somewhere, and more AI usage means more edge traffic.
That is finally showing up in Fastly's volumes. You don't need Fastly to be the "AI chip" to benefit; you just need the data to keep flowing.
Security is attaching to every new logo. Security is now a meaningfully bigger chunk of the revenue mix than it was 18 months ago.
Enterprises are rolling delivery and security into a single contract, which lifts average revenue per customer. That's the kind of recurring upsell that fixes a messy growth story over time.
Enterprise logos are coming back. Management rebuilt the enterprise sales motion over the last couple of years, and customer counts in the top cohort have been grinding higher.
You won't hear much noise about it. But durable enterprise logos beat ad-hoc Shopify-style traffic spikes every day of the week.
Action: Watch the Q3 release for a 2026 guide raise into the 20% to 21% range Oppenheimer is calling for. That is the single number that validates the turnaround.

What the Financials Are Signaling
Current Q3 guidance of $184 million to $190 million gives you a clean reference point. Oppenheimer thinks Fastly lands near the top. If they do, and they raise the full-year, the stock has a real catalyst to work with.
Free cash flow has turned positive, though it's still thin. That matters, because it starts to tell you the growth is being paid for by the business, not by shareholders diluting into oblivion.
Valuation is still cheap on a relative basis. On a price-to-sales basis, Fastly trades at a small fraction of what Cloudflare commands. Close even half that gap and the math gets interesting fast.
Action: Size the position assuming the FCF turn is real, but not yet confirmed. Any Q3 commentary pointing to positive full-year FCF would be a bigger deal than most people realize.

The Valuation Problem You Should Not Ignore
The multiple has already expanded. This is not the cigar butt it was.
The stock has nearly tripled this year and sits less than 20% below its 52-week high, so you're paying for the turnaround already starting to show up in the numbers. If Q3 disappoints, the air comes out fast.
You're paying for execution, not for a bargain. The thesis now rests on Fastly actually delivering a guide raise and hitting double-digit growth consistently.
That's a different kind of bet than buying a beaten-up name on cash and assets alone. Size with that in mind.

What Needs to Happen Next
Q3 earnings print. The near-term catalyst that matters most. Results are expected in early November. You want revenue at or above the high end, security growth cited as a key driver, and a tone shift from management on 2026.
A full-year guidance raise. A lift to the 2026 outlook into the 20% to 21% range Oppenheimer is calling for would validate the whole turnaround. Without it, the stock stays range-bound.
Enterprise retention. Net retention rate is the single metric that tells you whether existing customers are expanding. Above 110% and the growth story has legs.
Action: Mark the earnings date on your calendar and decide your post-print plan in advance. Pre-committing to add on a beat or trim on a miss keeps you from making the decision in the heat of the reaction.

Bear Case
Cloudflare keeps gaining share. Cloudflare is bigger, growing faster, and better marketed. If they continue to out-execute at the enterprise level, your Fastly recovery thesis runs out of fuel.
Customer concentration still lingers. Fastly has historically leaned on a handful of large customers for a disproportionate share of revenue.
Shopify was the classic example, where a single account pulling back on traffic hit a quarter hard. That's a risk you can't ignore.
Macro IT spend pullback. If enterprise budgets freeze into 2027, edge and security projects get pushed. Fastly is small enough that a soft spending cycle could kneecap the growth re-acceleration before it's fully proven.
Action: Keep Fastly a satellite position next to your core tech holdings, not a replacement for them.
It's a smaller, higher-volatility way to play AI traffic at the edge, and Oppenheimer's $35 target sits only a little above the 52-week high, so let the Q3 print earn the rest of the upside.

How I'd Frame a Position
Start small, scale into the print. Open a starter in the $26 to $31 range before Q3. Keep it modest, maybe a third of your intended size, so you have dry powder for the reaction.
Add on a post-earnings pullback. If the print beats but the stock sells the news (a classic pattern for momentum names), use any dip toward $22 to $24 to add. That becomes your average-down zone.
If you already own it. Resist the urge to dump the whole position into the earnings pop. Let a core piece run with a mental stop near $20, which is where the fundamental story would start to look broken.

Setup Scorecard
Entry Zone: $26 to $31 ahead of Q3 earnings
Target: $38 to $45 over 6 to 12 months if the guidance raise lands
Stop Loss: Reassess below $20
Catalyst Timeline: Q3 earnings expected in early November, with the full-year 2026 guidance refresh the key event
Confidence Level: Medium. The setup is real, but the stock has already moved, and execution risk is non-trivial.

Bottom Line
Fastly is not the easy, cheap, left-for-dead story it was 18 months ago. The multiple has rebuilt, and you're now paying up for the turnaround to actually show up in the numbers.
But with an analyst upgrade in hand, AI traffic flowing to the edge, and a Q3 print that could unlock a 2026 guide raise, this is one of the cleaner catalyst setups in mid-cap tech right now.
Start small, respect the risk, and let the earnings print tell you if the second half of the trade is worth taking.
